From the Driver’s Seat – October 2020
As I check the calendar, I note that October has suddenly flown by. Another month has passed into history and today as I man the keyboard we all are in day 230 of the 15 day “safer at home” scenario. Those initial days of restrictions were something. I had plenty of toilet paper but venturing out on the freeway was a scary delight with no traffic and driving time on the 405 to LAX right at 30 minutes. Those were the days.
October for our club offered a significant change from the virtual life we have been accustomed to though. Our Activities Committee and Jimmy Webster put together a well planned and executed poker run reminding all of us who participated why we are members of our fine club. Our route took us not only along a scenic route, but then to our finale with food trucks, a brewery, and drawings for numerous gifts. Thanks to Ron Nolan for arranging our destination and even providing latrine access as well.
Two of our stops along the poker run route were at Bunnin Chevrolet – Santa Paula and then at the latest addition to the Bunnin company, the new Bunnin Chevrolet – Fillmore. Conversation with management at both stops led to an offer to allow our club to conduct in-person business meetings at the newly remodeled and spacious Fillmore dealership. After seven months of holding meetings via Zoom, the offer seemed worth exploring. Our board concurred that the idea was worth throwing out to the membership for comments and recommendations. The overwhelming response received recommended giving the Fillmore location a try, with no viable meeting locations currently available in our community.
The initial plan will be to meet for our November General Meeting on Thursday, November 5, 2020 at 6:00 PM. Bunnin Chevrolet will provide seating, however if our attendance exceeds their available chairs, you should bring your own chairs just in case. Currently, no food service is available at the dealership, however an on-site café is planned to open soon. If you are comfortable in meeting in-person, please join us then, distancing provisions are planned.
As you read this, the World Series is done (Go Dodgers!), Halloween has passed and we have experienced another election season. We are moving on into November and the holiday season. December 5th has us conducting another food drive at Sam’s Club to again benefit the SCV Food Pantry. If you have not yet volunteered a portion of that Saturday to help in this very worthwhile endeavor, please do so. Contact us at activities@scvcc.org and let us know when you can serve.
Thanksgiving is almost here and we have much to be grateful for. Our families, our health, our well- being, and so many more things you can ad to the list. I personally want to say I am thankful for the opportunity to serve you all in our great club. The family comparison is often used and is somewhat cliché, but if there is a need you have or are aware of, please do not hesitate to reach out to fellow club members, even for TP!
Wishing one and all a great November and beyond.
Mike
