Winter ideally brings us in Southern California some much needed rain and one of those wet days happened to occur on January 16th, the day of our first Taste of the Town of the new year. I was anxious to attend and have a good meal at the Backwoods Inn on Sierra Highway in Canyon Country, finally back from a bout with a virus. Steak instead of chicken soup was the order of the day.
I rolled into the Backwoods Inn lot at the appointed hour expecting to find it full of Corvettes. I saw just one. I thought maybe attendance was down due to the weather or maybe others had my virus. Steak was still calling so I went in and asked where the Corvette club was meeting, directed to the back room. I was surprised to find the room filled with our members, who were busy enjoying one another’s company and preparing to order. Like me, everyone apparently didn’t want to wash their Vette on Friday and also drove the “tin-can”.
I have to give a shout out to prospective members Jim and Patt Watkinson for acknowledging that Corvettes have wipers and using his to wave the Corvette colors at our social event.
The Backwoods Inn says it has the “Best Steak in the book”, and it’s “Where the Locals Eat”. I tend to agree. The restaurant has been a favorite in our community since its opening in 1968 and I must say, my steak was excellent.
Did you know that the Backwoods Inn rakes the sawdust on the floor every morning and it is changed once a week on Sunday? Good to know I suppose.
Our Taste of the Town was another success and thanks to our organizers and attendees for making our night out a good one. And, thanks too to the Backwoods Inn staff for taking good care of us.
Taste of the Town on February 20th will be at Mama’s Table on Cinema Drive. See you there…in your Corvette!
The first Taste of the Town for 2020 will be at Backwoods Inn, (17846 Sierra Hwy, Canyon Country, CA 91351). Come and spend time with friends chatting about the holidays or if you were shot down at FlightDeck. It’s social, no business, and we drive there. Sounds to me like a ‘Drive-n-Eat’. Are those holiday pounds ever going to leave?
Our long time member and Christmas lights leader Les Hershberger will lead an approximately 1½ hour tour of Christmas lights in the Santa Clarita Valley. The tour concludes at Northridge Village Square where there is a variety of places to eat if you are looking for a late dinner or snack.

Come join your fellow club members for a tasty social event, no club business, at our own Claim Jumper. That’s right,it’s Taste of the Town time.
You know the drill. 6pm to 8:30pm or there about. Plan to come with a big appetite, you know, there’s lots of food.
Here’s the Claim Jumper Story, give it a read!
If during one of our recent general meetings, you witnessed a crowd of people gathered around the signup table and wondered what the fuss was about, it was most likely that they were signing up for the fourth annual Lasagna Dinner at the home of Don and Connie Ceo!
Because of space limitations, the event is limited to fifty people, and when you consider the delicious food and warm hospitality, you begin to understand why it fills up so quickly. Of course, this year was no exception, and a cool, early-fall evening was the perfect back-drop for good friends, and delicious Italian comfort food.
Since Don and Connie are always the consummate hosts, they make sure everyone is met with warm greetings, well-crafted cocktails, and an array of appetizers, many of which were provided by the club members in attendance.
With the nibbling and refreshments covered, everyone relaxed out on the covered patio. But it wasn’t long before dinner was called, and we were presented with an inviting buffet of warm rolls, fresh salad, and of course, the main entree of piping hot lasagna with its classic layers of pasta, cheese, and homemade sauce that all combined into a deep, rich, irresistible flavor.
There was also an ample amount of the best Italian sausage and peppers I’ve had in a long time. Seriously, this was so good!
After dinner we had an impressive selection of member provided desserts that included, cheese cakes, cookies, lemon bars, cobblers, cream puffs, and individual fruit tarts.
After dinner we kicked-back and lingered around the tables, and it wasn’t long before a card game broke out. The sounds of silver coins tinking together on the table was reminiscent of old-school Vegas as card players tried to bluff their way to winning enough cash for a down payment on a new C8.
Okay, maybe not, but if nothing else a lot of dimes and quarters changed ownership. At the same time, out on the patio a game of Shut the Box got started, and again untold riches were won and lost.
So next year, if the duo of Don and Connie are so gracious as to host a 5th annual event, be sure to get your name on the list early.
This month’s Taste-of-the-Town is at the one and only (in Santa Clarita) Outback Steakhouse. It on the Old Road and we thought it time to pay them a visit for a great steak or shrimp on the barbie, a Wallaby Darned, a Bloomin Onion and to be among great friends. Did I mention good beer? Let’s see if anyone has ordered a new C8.
Usual start time of 6PM.
Come join us for some fun and laughs while miniature golfing. Afterwards we will be stopping at Chapala Mexican Restaurant in Santa Paula for an early dinner. Depart noon, miniature golf at 1pm, early dinner ~ 4pm
