Pismo Getaway Weekend

Did you know that “Pismo” is Chumash for “call of the wild”? Well, not really, but it might be the new meaning when it comes to Corvette owners in the Santa Clarita Valley Corvette Club. Twenty-two of America’s favorite sportscars with almost double that number of participants left Santa Clarita for a three to four day outing in beautiful Pismo Beach. The caravan was a sight to behold as our assembly of cars headed out CA 126 and all the way north on US 101 on the getaway leg. Morning coffee necessitated a pit in Ventura and then it was clear sailing into Buellton for a traditional traveler’s lunch at Pea Soup Andersons.

Spring flowers and poppies were abundant in the lush green hillsides along the route accented by an array of Corvette shades all the way into our weekend destination, the Kon Tiki Inn. The hotel advertises itself as having “one of the best panoramic ocean views Pismo Beach hotels have to offer” and we will have to concur with their statement. The place can’t be beat. Even their parking spaces were EXTRA wide, to the delight of our Corvette owners!

Our weekend was designed to be a time to relax, with no planned agenda. But, the Central Coast lends itself to many activities, so there was something for everyone. To name just a few of the things our people did: wine tasting, dining, walks on the beach, watching sunsets, drives to local sites, kite flying, shopping, conversation, quad runner dune riding and even some car detailing.

Taste of the Town – CPK

April has arrived and so has Daylight Saving Time. The ideal weather and later sunset were a good combination to draw another crowd for our latest Thursday Taste of the Town. This month our affair was at the infamous California Pizza Kitchen (CPK) in Bridgeport.

Our 6 PM meeting/dining time was ideal to find parking, however there were a couple members who created their own special Corvette Corral out by the dumpsters. Who says Corvette people aren’t ingenious?

CPK makes some darn good designer pizza and the report is that our 37 attendees all found something of interest on the menu.

The CPK staff did an excellent job taking care of all of our needs and desires from the time we descended on the establishment and until the time we all filed out. Thanks, CPK, for taking good care of us and for your donation to our club charity fund. We are community partners.

The calendar says we will be enjoying the hospitality of the Olive Garden when we next meet for TOT on May 17th. PM is our meeting time, but hey, Olive Garden has some Happy Hour offerings you might want to check out. Just sayin’…

Until then, we will meet again at another fine event put together by our Activities Committee. If you want to help plan one or more of our upcoming functions, get with the committee and let’s make it happen.

Another C7 Update

No, not me again! The Grand Sport is fine. Now, though, think back a couple months when your editor (me) told you Tommy Couples is the guy. He knows his Corvette and knows when something is just not right.

Tommy is the guy who replaced the C6 which had gas tank issues with the C7 that was diagnosed with a transmission issue.

Next into Tommy’s garage was his newly acquired 2018 Ceramic Gray convertible. You know Tommy, my friend who expressed sorrow about my issues with the Grand Sport. Tommy heard noise in the left rear of his ‘Vette at about 48 mph that shouldn’t be there.

Ever mindful of his resources, Tommy researched the answer and on April 23rd he headed to the dealership to get things corrected. I will leave you all in suspense until the May meeting when Tommy will give us all the full and complete update in Car Talk. Prepare to take copious notes!

By the way, we will also be waiting for an update from Bob Shierer about his 2017 Grand Sport. It seems he too might have an issue similar to yours truly. We will see.

Remember though, while so many of non-Corvette people are concerned about replacing parts, they worry about knees and hips. Not us hearty Corvetters though, to us, the parts to be concerned with are those darn torque tubes and rear ends.

In the meantime, keep your ears open for indicator noises that shouldn’t be there and bookmark Corvette Forum on your computer!

Ventura-Group

Ventura Harbor Sat. Drive

The old saying goes, “April showers bring May Flowers”, but it’s March! What we are living is March showers bring changes to the itinerary.

The planned drive for a Saturday Spring outing to Ojai was literally scrubbed due to road conditions after a couple of weeks of rain. What to do? No problem. Our Activities people produced an alternate plan and our Communications guy got the word out and we were still good to go!

Twenty Corvettes with thirty-seven participants for the Saturday run assembled at Walmart for their drivers’ meeting for a caravan out CA 126 to Brophy Brothers at the Ventura Marina. The drive was beautiful under sparkling blue skies with the caravan adding to the amazing scenery. There were plenty of thumbs-up from our fellow drivers along the way. The staff at Brophy Brothers did a great job taking care of our orders and needs, especially after such short notice and our thanks go out to them.

Mark Ware came prepared with his drone and we all assembled for a group shot (top article photo) before heading for other activities in the area, around the marina and beyond. We were even treated to a “mermaid parade”, our lucky day!

Thanks to our Activities Committee for making it all happen and making the needed adjustments to plans so we could hit the road together after being confined by Mother Nature for the past week.

Taste of the Town – Chili’s

March again found us meeting for our third Thursday Taste of the Town at Chili’s. Not quite St. Pat’s Day, but still a great opportunity to sport some green or at least a shamrock as we once again tried the Chili’s menu.

Chili’s is one of those restaurant chains that you know exactly what you’re getting, with even a certain nostalgia of home. So, once again we rolled into one of our standbys at 39 strong, only down one from a year ago

The location offered plenty of Corvette parking and the food is always very tasty and filling. I too can attest that the service was great and we felt appreciated as customers.

Will it be Chili’s again next March? Only time can tell, or maybe our Activities Committee. As we move about our community and gather monthly at one of our many possible sites, we have to appreciate our Activities people for finding locations that will cheerfully handle such a large group. Great job!

Thanks to the Chili’s staff for handling our group as we descended on your establishment with such a large group. You did great and we appreciate your hospitality. You helped make our Taste-of-the-Town experience another delicious one!

Our next Club Social TOT will be at the Olive Garden – Valencia on April 19th. Personally, I am a spaghetti and meatball fan and enjoy the salad with bread, but there is plenty on the menu to choose from. Remember, you’ve got to eat, so come meet Corvette friends at another of our favorite TOT locations. See you there.

Sunday Drive (and eat) : Malibu

The final February event promised a beautiful sunny winter run to Agoura Hills for a well-earned meal. Food is one thing, but we all know the attraction really is a Corvette Caravan.

The attendees were instructed to assemble in the Wal-Mart lot at 10:30 AM for the required headcount and drivers’ meeting and assemble they did. It was a task to just count the Corvettes with the turnout for this one. The final count was 53 people in 27 Corvettes. Great turnout!

Corvettes of all colors and nearly all generations made up the assembly that yours truly witnessed heading out westbound toward their ultimate destination, Ladyface Ale Companie on Agoura Road in Agoura Hills. (see page 16 for my alibi).
Great patio seating under perfect weather complimented the fantastic food at Ladyface. The Alehouse & Brasserie was established by local residents from Agoura Hills in 2009 and was named L.A. Weekly’s 2013 Best Brewery in LA. Ladyface is known for their award-winning Belgian, French and American style ales and is one of Los Angeles County’s first revival craft breweries.

But wait, it appears there were more things in store. A good number added yet another destination to an already lovely run with a stop off for more Corvette camaraderie at another great destination, Rosenthal Winery in Malibu.
The majority of the group also elected to make it an ocean side run and continued down Kanan Road to PCH for a great drive along the beach. The ocean waters and views were outstanding.

Enroute home, a short detour to Santa Paula Chevrolet was in order for what was described as a photo-op. It looked like it might have been more than that with one of our couples getting the feel for a 2018 ZO6!

While many parts of the USA deal with winter in their own way with their Corvettes garaged until summer, things are different in these parts. Driving weather is at least one advantage we enjoy here in SoCal. What a fantastic day. Nothing but the finer things for a SCVCC run!

Casa Vieja Mexican Restaurant

Our February Taste-of-the-Town social event was a repeat of last year’s destination and was once again a great evening out. Our crew filled the Casa Vieja Mexican Restaurant in Canyon Country with Corvettes on February 15th, just a day after Valentine’s Day. As usual, attendance was again noteworthy with thirty-five of our club people counted. It was another excellent showing for a chilly and dark Santa Clarita winter evening.

The staff of Casa Vieja as always did an excellent job in handling our group as we filled their establishment. Food and beverages were excellent as well. Thanks go out to Casa Vieja for making our latest Taste-of-the-Town experience another good one!

Our next Club Social TOT will also be a repeat this year, at Chili’s – Golden Valley, on March 15th. Chili’s menu has plenty of options. You’ll find everything from their world-famous Baby Back Ribs or Chili to their hand-crafted sandwiches, enchiladas, and quesadillas. The only thing missing is corned beef and cabbage.

Dinner & Movie : Westlake Village

2017 was a rainy time to roll to a dinner and movie adventure in the Westlake Promenade, but not so 2018. Club members are traditionally eager to caravan somewhere in their Corvettes when food might be involved, so when you throw in hot buttered popcorn, the turnout is great as well. A sun-shiny day helps too!

The route was reported to be outbound on CA 126 then to CA 23, up the windy road of Grimes Canyon and then on into Westlake for the caravan destination.

The Westlake Promenade is always a great destination for a date night or a day of family fun. Cinépolis offers the best entertainment & dining in the area and before your movie, you can take a stroll in the beautifully rejuvenated outdoor shopping and entertainment center or relax in the gorgeous Cinépolis Lounge. The 8 screen, 618 Seat Theater boasts a state-of-the-art audio system, a plush outdoor salon area, heat lamps and more.

So, there you have it. No rain to scare off our hearty members and a “date night” run for dinner and movies to get a jump on Valentine’s Day in beautiful Corvette automobile

Hot Rods 4 Heros

October 8th was another great opportunity for several club members to participate in the 4th Annual Hot Rods 4 Heroes Car & Motorcycle Show at American Legion Post 507 on Spruce St. in Newhall. The event featured over 100 cars, trucks, motorcycles, live music, kids zone, raffles, breakfast burritos, coffee and lunch and a beer garden, with all proceeds support local SCV Veteran Programs and the Post 507 building renovation projects.

John Noble and Jim Fulmer were among our members who participated in the show with their Chevy and Corvette. One of our newest members, Patty Kemple, took home the Best GM trophy for her ’69 Corvette and prospective member Miron Kalebjian got the Best of Show trophy for his ’55 Chevy. Congratulations!
